Do you know what you want to do with your life? What do you want to do after graduating from high school? Do you want to do something that can make a difference in the world? Something to do with the environment, with people, something to help?
How about a job in forest products? Forest products is not just paper, it’s lots of things. Sure it’s many things that we take for granted, like furniture and building materials, but it’s also molded panels in automobiles, an anti-cancer drug, rayon clothing, vanilla flavoring in ice cream, even a giant roller coaster made of wood.
If you make something out of wood, it’s easier on the environment. For instance, you release less carbon dioxide into the air when you build with wood. In fact, lots of carbon dioxide is stored in wood products used in your home and elsewhere. Plus it takes much less energy to manufacture with wood than with steel, aluminum, plastics, or concrete. And harvesting of trees can be done in an environmentally safe manner. People in forest products careers find new, better ways to use wood. Efficiency, making more out of less, is what it’s all about.
Forest products is one of the largest industries in the U.S., with 1.4 million employees nationwide. And last year there were fewer than 300 graduates with training in forest products in the whole country. Jobs are available in wood technology, engineering, wood chemistry, marketing, product and process design, and much more.
