Dr. Junyong (J.Y.) Zhu, Fellow of 2012, a scientific team leader at the US Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin, recently honored with US Forest Service R&D Deputy Chief’s Distinguished Science Award. The award was given annually by the Deputy Chief for R&D to a US Forest Service scientist for his sustained research productivity and excellence and the impact of his research.

Dr. Junyong (often called JY) Zhu joined the US Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), Madison, WI, in Feb 2003 as a project Leader. Prior to US Forest Service, Dr. Zhu had worked at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (a private graduate institution, currently part of Georgia Institute of Technology) for 10 years, first as an Assistant Professor, then as an Associate Professor. Currently, he is a scientific team leader at FPL engaging research and development in woody biomass utilization for sugar/biofuel, chemicals, fiber, and cellulose nanomaterials production. He also holds an Adjunct Professorship at the Dept. of Biological Systems Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Zhu contributed extensively to wood and fiber utilization, from air emission and process control in kraft pulp mills, utilization of small diameter trees for commercial production of thermal mechanical pulp, upgrading and pretreatment of forest residues and mountain pine beetle killed lodgepole pine for biofuel production, development of novel methods for the production of cellulose nanomaterilas, to fundamentals of cellulase enzyme interactions with lignocelluloses for bioconversion of woody biomass. He co-authored over 145 referred publications and is a co-inventor of 17 US patents and patent applications.

Dr. Zhu served on many international review panels such as the Canadian National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) research program (2006), the Chile Economic Development Agency (InnovaChile-CORFO) International Center of Excellence in Bioenergy (2011). Dr. Zhu serves on the editorial boards of several technical journals, including TAPPI Journal (also a Technical Editor, the official publication of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry), BioEnergy Research (also an Associate Editor), China Pulp and Paper (the official publication of the Chinese Technical Association of the Paper Industry). He is also the Vice Chair of Forest Bioproducts Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).
