This year we again cosponsored our Annual Meeting with Forest Products Society (FPS) as we have since 1958 when the organization began. We have done this every year until 2008 when we changed our meeting format to begin even-numbered years in an international venue and held it in Concepcion, Chile with the Universidad del Bio-Bio. Meetings in 2009, 2011, and 2013 were held with FPS. Our 2010 meeting was in Geneva, Switzerland at the United Nations with UNECE Timber Committee, and our 2012 was in Beijing, China with International Centre for Bamboo and Rattan.

The 2013 meeting was a successful event in Austin, and attendees found many interesting sessions to attend and people to talk with. The SWST June 9 Session will have the pdfs of the presentations available on the website in the next few days. For FPS sessions, you will have to request these from the FPS Headquarters. This year SWST cooperated with FPS even more by cosponsoring the full meeting, having a joint award luncheon, joint poster session and student poster competition, as well as a joint opening ceremony. For ease of management, SWST offered FPS the total registration income and SWST was not responsible for any expenses.

Our 2014 meeting will be in Zvolen, Slovakia with the Technical University of Zvolen. More details will be coming soon on that meeting so be on the lookout! The meeting will be June 23-27, 2014 and the overall general theme is “Sustainable Resources and Technology for Forest Products”.

In 2015 the SWST Executive Board decided they wanted to try a new meeting format and approach so we WILL NOT be hosting with FPS. We are opening up a call for proposals to cooperate to any member of SWST.

–One idea is to hold the meeting at a university campus where we can have lower costs, in-kind donations such as complimentary meeting space and AV, and have the opportunity to tour university facilities that are interesting to attendees and also local wood industries.
–Another idea is to hold a Gordon Conference style meeting where we would go to a remote location (such as state park, national park or forest), and have the meeting there along with opportunities to see wood industries and nature explorations.
–We on the Executive Board are open to suggestions and want to make this meeting what you, the members, want.

Please submit your ideas and proposals to Vicki Herian by November 1, 2013.
