1996 Leadership Summit of the
Renewable Natural Resources
Foundation (RNRF): "Working Towards
a Sustainable Future"
WASHINGTON, D.C.
I represented the
Society of Wood Science and Technology
at this meeting on June 14 at the
American Geophysical Union
headquarters in Washington, D.C. and
sponsored in cooperation with the
American Association of Engineering
Societies and the World Engineering
Partnership for Sustainable Development.
RNRF mission is to advance
interdisciplinary science, understanding,
and stewardship of renewable resources
by fostering activities among professional,
scientific, and educational organizations
and through public education. SWST,
along with 20 other organizations, make
up the membership.
The meeting was attended by about thirty
five leaders from the societal membership
and focused on organizations programs
and the challenges of sustainable
development. There were four plenary
talks on various topics of sustainable
natural resource development. The last
talk was by Keith Laughlin, from the
President's Council on Environmental
Quality. Keith talked about the report by
the President's Council on Sustainable
Development, "Sustainable America: A
New Consensus for Prosperity,
Opportunity, and a Healthy Environment
for the Future and the implementation of
this report's recommendations.
Working sessions were held and several
recommendations and action items were
suggested. Several that would effect
SWST are:
o RNRF would serve as a clearing house
for directing inquiries on sustainable
natural renewable resource development
to its member organizations.
o RNRF would be aware of possible site
visits through member organizations to
provide information or demonstrate good
practices for sustainable development of
our natural renewable resources.
o The importance of global influences on
the sustainable development are
understood and international involvement
for member organizations was
encouraged. - Howard Rosen, RNRF
Board Member for SWST
If you recall the last
iteration of "Connections"
(it seems like such a long
time ago...), you know that
our story left off without an
ending. Well, I am
pleased to report a happy
ending, in that I was able
to successfully "uucode"
my binary file for transfer
by email. And, Mischa (my accomplice
and tutor in all of this) was able to decode
the file on the receiving end. You may
also recall that this procedure lends itself
(to the non-computer jock, anyway) to a
certain amount of gnashing of teeth.
Happily, there are easier ways to send
files back and forth over the Internet, so
let's explore a couple of these
procedures.
Some of you may have an email program
that has some unknown (to you, anyway)
functions. For instance, I use a "pop"
mail program called Eudora, which has
this mysterious thing called "BinHex 4.0."
It turns out that this is a program which
will convert your BINary files (e.g. a word
processing file or an executable program)
to a HEXidecimal file which is a format
that you can then send by email. And the
marvel is that the pop mail program will
automatically convert your attached file
for you in either the send or receive
mode. The only trick is that whomever
you are corresponding with must have a
compatible program to decode your
BinHex-encoded file. Maybe you have
had the wonderful experience of receiving
a screen full of computer garbage, with
the only discernible phrase "This file must
be decoded using BinHex 4.0" appearing
at the top. Perhaps you sat there
scratching your head over this, but really
this is trying to simplify your life (i.e.,
avoid the trouble of uucoding). If you
have this on your email program, try it on
one of your buddies and see if you can
get it to work!
An even simpler means (to my way of
thinking) for file transfer is to ftp your files.
Maybe you've used ftp to GET files
(download) from the Internet. You can
also use ftp to SEND files. The only
catch here is that you generally need to
have the person on the receiving end to
set up their computer so that you have
remote access to their disk (after all, they
wouldn't want just anyone stuffing
programs and files onto their computer).
Mischa provided me with such access to
his computer at LSU, and believe me,
sending files to him by ftp is marvelous.
I use a program called "WS_FTP" and it
automatically encodes binary files for
rapid transfer over the Internet. Isn't
technology amazing? - D.D.S
WOODPRO
is a lumber
database and wood
selection expert
system. It runs on any
IBM PC or compatible.
As a database
WOODPRO contains
331 common types of
wood and their
properties. As an expert system
WOODPRO can make simple or
complicated queries that use physical
properties, woodworking properties, color,
and current prices. For example, you
could ask it for all the strong black woods
that plane well, and list them by order of
price.
WOODPRO exists because I want to
spread the word about the amazing,
varied, and under used properties of
wood.
You can download WOODPRO from
either of these sites:
ftp://ftp.rahul.net/pub/geary/woodpro
http://www.woodworking.com
WOODPRO is for suppliers,
professionals, and hobbyists.
Suppliers can load the price file with their
prices. Customers who use WOODPRO
in the yard can only see wood that is in
stock. The price file can be distributed by
email at no cost.
Professionals can easily make their own
price file (if they want) for the suppliers
they use. WOODPRO's queries provide
quick cost-effective alternatives to the
small number of woods each professional
normally uses. Lower costs and happier
customers mean bigger profits.
Hobbyists can use WOODPRO to quickly
find the right wood for the job at the right
price without having to cross-reference a
bunch of woods in a pile of books (unless
they want to).
