Membership Qualifications
A member shall be a graduate of an accredited college or university as
defined in Section 3 of the Constitution, and shall have met the
formal education requirements or satisfied the permissible
substitutions specified in the Bylaws.
Requirements for Membership Through Formal Education
1. The Bachelor of Science or an advanced degree in the field of Wood
Science and Technology or Forest Products.
2. The curriculum of study includes the following elements: A
foundation in mathematics (including differential and integral
calculus), chemistry (including organic chemistry), general physics
and biology. A minimum background in Wood Science, including biology
of wood, physics and chemistry of wood, and wood engineering. A
meaningful program of study involving at least two or more of the
following areas of concentration: basic sciences and wood science,
wood technology, pulp and paper technology, forestry and wood
utilization, and industrial engineering and business, including
quality control and management.
3. Deficiencies in one of the wood sciences may be made up by credit
earned in advanced courses in related general sciences. Deficiencies
in areas of concentration may be made up by work experience in
concentration area.
Requirements for Membership Through Specialized Experience
1. The B.S. or higher degree in the field of mathematics, chemistry,
biology, physics, management, economics, engineering, business or
forestry.
2. At least two years of employment related to the wood industry in
a reasonably technical position (please specify).
Requirements for Student Membership
Full-time enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate curriculum which
will permit qualification for membership.
Requirements for Developing Country International
Membership
1. Member shall be from a qualifying list of developing countries as
recognized by SWST.
2. The member shall have the same requirements for membership as listed in
Article II above.
