Friday, October 15: Final Day Tour
CERN, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne,
Sauvabelin Tower

The last day of the Convention is a day-long tour including visits to the Center for European Nuclear Research (CERN), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), and Sauvabelin Tower. The $75 fee for this tour will be collected with registration.

  1. CERN - Center for European Nuclear Research
The CERN building houses the mammoth wooden Globe of Science and Innovation which was built of engineered wood products (huge arching glulam beams and OSB) and lumber from windthrown timber from the even bigger 2000 storm which felled the equivalent of 3 years' harvest in 2 days in Europe. The Globe was built for Expo 2002 in Switzerland, in Neuchatel, and later disassembled and moved to CERN. CERN is where the Internet started.  We will also visit one of CERN’s experiment sites which are located above ground over the 27-kilometer accelerator ring.

  2. EPFL - École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne
EPFL is the Federal Polytechnic University in Lausanne. EPFL has impressive programs in wood technology, including extremely innovative uses of wood for structures.
  3. Sauvabelin Tower
Built in 2003 using wood cut from local forests, this building is 35 meters in height and provides a unique 360 degree panoramic view over the city, Lake Geneva, the mountains and the neighboring countryside.
